Hardboard Siding

The three main categories of hardboard or composite wood siding are 1. particleboard (PB), 2. medium density fiberboard (MDF), and 3. hardboard (HB). These three types are made primariiy of materials consisting of wood products and cellulosic particles of various sizes which are bonded together with a synthetic resin or binder under extreme heat and pressure. The use of formaldehyde in manufacturing could be considered a drawback in particleboard and medium density fiberboard. However, government regulations control formaldehyde emissions to specified limits.

Hardboard, by contrast, does not use formaldehyde in its fabrication. Additionally, hardboard is especially suited for exterior siding because of its strength, durability and resistance to abrasion and moisture. The process responsible for creating such resilience in engineered or composite hardboard wood siding utilizes inter-felted ligno-cellulosic fibers combined under heat and pressure.

Other names for engineered or composite wood siding are oriented strand board (OSB) and veneered plywood.

Engineered or composite wood siding offers economy, easy installation and a wide variety of decorative looks. Some styles do lack the appearance of real wood because of a uniform grain, but it can be an alternate choice to vinyl or aluminum siding because engineered or composite wood siding tends to look more natural.
